Venetian Bridge

350 m from city center of Argassi

This landmark of Argassi was built at the beginning of the 19th century. It was originally part of the coastal road, starting at the church of St. Spiridon of Sgournes and ending at the Venetian Vardiola just before Davia. Over time, the sea rose, and, alongside natural erosion, it covered the road, leaving only parts of the bridge above water. It is a beautiful spot of Zakynthos, and it’s almost poignant to think of all the carriages and people in the past who took the bridge to travel around the island.

Domenegini Tower

1.1 km from city center of Argassi

The Domeneghini Tower is on the coast of Argassi, once a countryside locale with orchards and rural plantations that today has been turned into one of the most popular holiday resorts of Zakynthos. The Domeneghini family, which owned the tower-country manor, settled in Zakynthos right after the fall of Chandax in Crete (1669) and was enrolled in the Libro d’Oro in 1741. The family also owned the neighboring church of Hagios Theodosios, as well as the adjacent fountain, known as «Solomos Fountain», most probably because of the frequent visits the national poet, Dionysios Solomos, made to the Domeneghini family's country manor. The Tower is inextricably linked to the National Liberation Struggle of 1821. Friendly Society members held meetings at the mano,r and Theodoros Kolokotronis took a boat from there to launch the revolution in the Peloponnese.

Aquaduct Vrysakia

1 km from city center of Argassi

One of the finest buildings hidden in dense vegetation is the old Aqueduct located in "Vrysakia". It was built in the 19th century during British rule to collect water from natural springs and transport it to Zakynthos Town via a complex pipe system. The most interesting part is the "Vourderis Camara," a magnificent bridge, 15 meters high. It has a series of archways bearing the pipes that brought water to the main town. Legend has it that Kolokotronis, who lived on Zakynthos for 15 years before the 1821 Greek War of Independence, was very fond of this place and used to ride his horse over the bridge.
