Gerakas beach is considered one of the most attractive beaches of Zakynthos

Gerakas is a huge sandy beach on the south east tip of Zakynthos (Zante) island. It’s just 16km from the capital which is around a 25 minute drive.

The stunning bay of Gerakas is an unspoiled section of coast that’s the perfect spot for a tranquil break away from the more tourist heavy beaches on the island. It’s relatively free from commercialisation with a few sun beds available to rent, no water sports, no taverna and no music.

If you need refreshments then you’ll have to either bring them with you or make the short trip back up the path towards the car park where you’ll find a mini market and a couple of tavernas.

The golden sands of this gently shelving beach are great for long, romantic walks, while its shallow waters provide safe swimming for families with small children. Kids will also enjoy playing in the sand and finding a bit of room for the kids to play in is simple as the main part of beach stretches for for over 500 metres If you are coming with children then you might want to stay clear of the southern end of the beach as that end is often used by nudists.

The protected turtle nests dotted along the beach help keep the endangered Caretta Caretta species safe, which makes this sandy stretch especially good for exploring the wonders of nature. There’s also the turtle rescue centre a couple of minutes away so be sure to pop in there and learn about these fabulous creatures.
